It should start with a comprehensive 3D model of the existing equipment. It could involve emulation of the Rubic cube, simulation of the code, and virtual linking of the code to the 3D image. Rockwell has emulation software. We have augmented reality glasses if they are compatible with your project I did a quick search for Development of Digital Twin on google scholar and found 692,000 papers - while obviously not all of these will be relevant I'm sure you'll find 20 or 30 which will lead you to how to develop a digital twin.
