I have worked with the 3d book showcase script on a previous project. For #1 you can still use the buttons just style them differently, this is the best option, hiding the text and adding a background image. Anything would have bad Search Engine impacts as well as for screen readers and what not. #2 closing the book by clicking inside of it is easy. #3 not 100% sure what you mean here. I think I understand that you want one book to be open when the page is loaded? But you talk about images 1,2,3,4 ? The text of the books are not images so I am not sure what you mean.
