I enjoyed playing chess. At one time I was so addicted to the game that I would spend hours by myself going through the recorded games of grand masters. Aaron Nimzowitsch was my favourite. I was so enthralled by his philosophy: "first restrain, next blockade, lastly destroy". He destroyed many opponents, and it is a pleasure to watch as they are rendered totally helpless before he delivers the "coup de gras". I can only imagine the relief of Reti, Gruenfeld and others, in the early twentieth century, when they lost to Nimzowitsch, and could then escape the excruciating squeeze.
