I've been programming for over 30 years including commercial games. I actually completed an assignment a few months ago that was very similar to this, but it was in Java with 3 different characters, a hole digger, an adventurer, and a teleportation marker character. You had to find the gold and then get to the exit. I extended the project for full extra credit.
