Design a Control/Widget for the website

We need to design a control/widget for our website. What do we select: We allow users to enter two things simultaneously: a value and a type/category of the value. The trick is that we also allow users to enter it with free text. Then we parse the free text. If parsing was successful, we determine the type/category of the value. If parsing is not successful - we ask use to click the most appropriate type/category. See the mockup: [login to view URL] The mockup is built around selecting rank of a seaman and a corresponding department. Please mind that the trick is to allow users to enter free text or use the drop-down list with predefined values. The widget will be used on the website [login to view URL], so refer to styles of input fields there. Requirements to the design: - it must be in line with the styles of inputs at [login to view URL] - it must clearly focus user's attention at what we expect from him next - consider using icons or color coding for types/categories - think usability first, design - second
