Ransomware is a form of malware developed by criminal organizations, that installs itself on your computer, and then encrypts your files, preventing you from accessing them. The ransomware then demands money to restore your files for you. The malware further threatens to destroy your files if you don’t pay up. It is basically holding your files for ransom. How do I get infected? Mostly by plugging someone else’s infected flash drive in your computer. Ransomware can also be surreptitiously downloaded onto your computer by a malicious website, or by email attachments from people you don’t know. How do I protect myself? Update often. Ensure your antivirus software, Windows, Office, and vulnerable software such as PDF Reader and Java are always up to date. Exercise caution. Never click on links or attachments from unknown sources to stay safe. Back up often. Ensure that you always have a recent backup of your files. Don’t enable Microsoft Office Macros by default. Only use macros from highly trusted sources. Most of all, never ever use flash drives to share files between computers, especially with others from outside the company, and use cloud storage to share files instead.
