Instruction to students
Produce a fully referenced 1500 word written review on A3 sized sheets and
supporting A3 digital portfolio/ study sheets to demonstrate your understanding of
“Design Procedures and Procurement” tasks undertaken by the building team/
stakeholders when using the RIBA Plan of Work (POW 2007/ 2013) for an
architectural design commission.
Include appropriate sections of written work and select suitable visual examples of
typical outputs/ communications (written, numeric, tabular, and graphical) produced
by the building team/ stakeholders throughout all the differing RIBA Workstages:
Building Team/ Stakeholders & Appointments
Identify stakeholders and summarise their roles and responsibilities from the
start to completion of an architectural commission.
Show how stakeholders attain their professional status and state which
professional body they would be registered with.
What forms of appointment would each stakeholder sign with the client and
record the professional fees charged by each for an architectural commission.
Types of Architectural Practices and Human & Physical Resources
Record the differing types of professional Architectural practices that are
currently used within the construction industry and show typical projects that
have been undertaken by small, medium and large practices.
How would an architectural practice be setup and what typical human and
physical recourses would be used to manage manual and technology based
working practices.

RIBA POW (2007/2013) & Procurement paths
State the purpose of the RIBA Plan of work, record the differing stages and
note the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders using this document.
Identify various procurement paths, state their key advantages &
disadvantages and show typical architectural projects that have been
successfully built using these procurement paths.
Bill of Quantities, Costing/ Estimating
What is the purpose of a Bill of Quantities (BOQ), which stakeholders are
involved in producing this document and how is it used to control design
quality, costs and predict site construction time scales for a project.
Tendering:
Which stakeholders are normally involved in tendering actions and what
typical documents would be included to form a tender package comprise.
Explain the process of single & two staged tendering, state their advantages
& disadvantages and record typical management and administrative
procedures that are implemented to successfully select a Main Contractor?
Types Contracts
Make a comprehensive list of typical building contacts that are used in
construction, state their advantages & disadvantages and show completed
architectural projects built by a Main Contractor by using these contracts.
State typical factors leading to the termination/ “determination” of a contract
and record the procedures used by the Main Contractor and stakeholders.
Main Contractor Project Management & Contract Administration:
What are the roles & responsibilities of the Main Contractors and associated
stakeholders in the areas of project management and contract administrative
procedures for site mobilisation and safe site construction work?
How is the quality of workmanship by trades/ site workers, budgets &
construction progress monitored by the Main Contractor and stakeholders?
State the Main Contractor and stakeholders procedures used in the handover
of a completed building, providing feedback and aftercare during the “defects
liability period” to repair faults and carry out maintenance in the future.
