Correct broken links in Wordpress - htcaccess file

My client's site was recently moved to another server and the permalinks broke. Need to get it back working correctly.
Here is additional information from my client about this project:
before the migration to the new server, our pages could all be found under a custom name. Now, they are all using the Wordpress Default name. When I utilize the Permalinks options within Wordpress to change to ilovebigals.com/%postname%, all pages return at 404 page not found error. In my beginning troubleshooting research, I found mention of an unwritable “.htaccess” related to the server.
