So how does Eternal Blue work, and what makes it so dangerous? The original SMB 1.1 protocol had a flaw which allowed specially crafted packets to let attackers gain access to a shared file system without the need for authentication. This allowed ransomware, like WannaCry, to spread through networks with no mitigation. It’s important to note that recent install of Windows 7 and Windows 10 have SMB 1.0 and 1.1 disabled by default and, instead, use SMB 2.0. It also hasn’t been reported that Nix systems that utilize prior SMB protocols have been vulnerable. So, how do you mitigate the Eternal Blue exploit? The answer is easy enough.
