I have created similar software using MiKTeX (a LaTeX implementation) to obtain the displayed version of the equation. I believe similar results could be achieved without any TeX system by recursively analyzing the expression tree to determine how to display the parts of the equation in the expected position with the expected size. Additionally, do you need an in place WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor; or a simple program that converts an expression string to a formatted equation? An in place editor will require additional time coding for all the cursor placement issues that will inevitably come up. I can write all the code preferably in VB6 or in C++ or in a .NET language if desired.

I believe I can do this for yoy but it would be helpful to know more detail. For example, do you need the application to "print" the equation onto an image file (such as a gif) for web display as MathType does?
