Modification of the ztr file formate to support lossless encoding of .ab1 format files Background The ztr file format is a lossy encoding of a the special .ab1 file format. The .ab1 file is generated by a particular scientific instrument known as a DNA sequencer. Both the ztr and .abi file format are well described (see links below) and an open source library (io_lib) is available to convert .ab1 files to the ztr file format. The current ztr file format use a specific data encoding that enables the .ab1 data to be compressed more efficiently. In particular, the ztr file format encodes the major component of the .ab1 file (the Signal data) in a form that compresses to a much higher degree with gzip and bzip. Project Description The project involves extending the io_lib and ztr file format to permit lossless conversion of .ab1 files to ztr files and back again. The aim is to generate a new file format that will compress better because the signal data (which makes up 96% of the .ab1 file) is formated into the more compressible ztr encoding. This file format will permit the original .ab1 file to be extracted as desired but stored more efficiently. I also require a simple command line program that uses the modified io_lib to enable files to be converted from .ab1 to lossless ztr files and back again. Project Requirements The io_lib is in C so all work will need to be done in C. The code changes will need to be cross-platform and portable to Unix, Linux and Windows. Conclusion This should be an interesting and not very difficult project. I have a range of scientific software projects to be accomplished so I interested in establishing a long term relationship. I am also willing to select programers with no feedback provide they are keen and can show me that the have the skills required to accomplish to the project. Please PM with any questions you have.
