Contextualize one artefact from an exhibition

From our excursion to ACMI (in week 7) you are required to contextualize (2500 words) one artefact/object/item/person from the Screen Worlds exhibition (ACMI) in regard to the exhibition as a whole – as well as the film(s)/genre/cycle/personnel from which it is related. In regard to your selected item of inquiry, you will need to discuss how it is displayed more broadly within the exhibition. Where does it appear? What objects appear around it? What is written about this artefact at the exhibition? Also – how do ‘tourists’ respond when visiting this exhibit? (This will require you to do some firsthand research.) Furthermore, you will need to discuss your item in regard to the film(s) from which it is related. Why has this particular item been included in the exhibition? How is your item been represented/involved in its particular film(s)? Why is this item so important to the culture of Australian cinema? How is this item more broadly celebrated? As this exhibition is quite varied, examples could range from the Mad Max car to the Baz Luhrmann display or sections devoted to ‘themes’ such as ‘Australian sounds’ from bush films. You are encouraged to be as adventurous and/or creative as you like, so please keep this in mind with your choice. The piece can select any item on display at Screen Worlds as related to the Australian cinema. This means that you are NOT permitted to choose items related to television and video game culture. Assessment criteria • Explanation as to why you have chosen this artefact/item/object; • Understanding of the item within Australian cinema (either/or historically; industrially, aesthetically); • Structure and ability to express your ideas; • Demonstration of primary and secondary research; • Originality of thought, expression, description; • Quality of critical analysis as relevant; • Ability to respond to the set parameters of the task; • Evident engagement and participation with the Screen Worlds exhibition.
