Financial Accounting MYOB Case Study

The assignment will be released at the end of week 5. If you want to get a feel for the nature of the assignment, look at the details provided in CH 10 of the textbook. As you can see CH 10 consists of a list of transactions for the month of January 2011; no data input instructions are provided as you are expected to know how to record these transactions and events from your study of CH 2 to 8 of the textbook.

You will be provided with a MYOB data file, which is complete to the end of CH 8. The transactions in your assignment are an extension of those already recorded in the case study. A critical component of the assignment is to add a User ID to the file provided, so you can log in using this User ID and record the transactions and events. The audit trail report will identify you as the User responsible for the data input on that file. Instructions are provided in the assignment document and you are required to follow these instructions. If your Audit trail report shows data entry as completed by the Administrator your file will not be accepted and you will receive a result of 0.

The assignment is designed to test your ability to use the various aspects of MYOB that we have covered in this course. It is a significant component of your total assessment, contributing 25% towards your final grade. A good result in this assignment and the quizzes can really take the pressure off you in the end of semester exam.

The first thing to realise about the assignment is that it is a large piece of work. If you refer to the course specification you will see we have allowed 20 hours for the completion of the assignment; some people will do it quicker than this but some people will take longer. Tip 1: start immediately after the assignment becomes available and do a little bit each day; don’t leave it to the weekend before (or the day before – you would find that really stressful!).

Tip 2: think about it consisting of two parts – the first part is recording the transactions and events, checking the tax codes used and the bank reconciliations (the first few requirements). This might take between 4 and 8 hours. The second part of this assignment is doing the end of month activities – the accounting worksheet, adjusting entries and preparing the financial statements; this will take somewhere between 5 to 10 hours.

One advantage of this assignment is that it allows you to take advantage of any spare time you have – even in 10 or 15 minutes you can record quite a few [url removed, login to view] do not be put off by the ‘size’ of the assignment – it is time consuming but not overly difficult (it has some challenging aspects but most of it is straightforward if you have prepared well); trust me, it is a lot more work for me to prepare than it is for you to complete. 

Tip 3: the assignment instructions are very detailed and I recommend you read them carefully; maybe read them several times before you start. The instructions set out what you are required to do in sequence, so hopefully you won’t find it too difficult. Don’t rush ahead to the requirements – the first few pages are important (downloading the MYOB file and creating a User ID, etc.).
