Almost all these syntax highlighters use regular expressions or optimized specializations thereof. I got an A+ in my university theory of computing class; I could write a regular expression parser if I had to. I also use Linux on my main machine so I have experience picking up these little configuration languages and getting something done with them. And for what it's worth I've used both gEdit and kate before.
