Change SSH port number on VPS to prevent brute force attacks

My VPS is suffering 500 errors on all hosted website accounts intermittently everyday lasting approx. 1 minute. The hosting company (GoDaddy) has advised me that the server is under brute force attack and that changing the SSH port from 22 to something else will fix this.
I need someone to;
- change the SSH port
- make sure the brute force attack has stopped
- make sure the 500 errors are no longer happening
- perform further diagnostics to figure out the cause of the 500 errors and fix if necessary.
