Hello I have experience with cloudflare, magento and varnish plus redis. I would skip varnish since it does not work with HTTPS. There are other methods to speed up website. Redis wont help either. What will help is cloudflare and if possible php version upgrade to 7.1. 7.x is much faster then php 5.6 for example but magento 1 does not support 7.x php official way. There are patches to make it support php 7. Patches are from magento developers himself. Hi The reason for the performance issue is in most cases because of poor code implementation. In most cases there is too much data that is loaded individually from the external sources (like a database). Another likely scenario is that the server is using PHP 5 instead of version PHP 7. Utilising proxy caching (like Varnish and Cloudflare) should always be your last resort. By offloading all site content you will introduce new issues. Also, a proxy caching is only a measure of “hiding” the real issue behind the poor performances. As soon as the cache is cleared the poor performance will again appear until the site is cached again. The first issue in hand is to evaluate the real reason for the high loader speed. Go though all templates, blocks and models and reduce the amount of database traffic and ensure that the database is configured correctly to handle the traffic load. After that, utilise Redis to implement an entity level cache layer that caches results from the database and inside Redis. By using Magentos implementation of entity tagging it's also possible to only clear the cache that is updated and not the hole page (as needed in proxy/fpc). By going through all these parts first and implementing a solution for them you will get a more even page speed. After that, once again assess the page speed and see if more action is needed.
