College Student Information System (CSiS)

We need to develop a college student information system. The system is to be used by universities and ourselves to sell online courses and manage student that bought and enrolled onto courses. As phase 1 there are three main tables in the DB. Students, Enrollments, Courses. Each table needs the normal amount of details such as the Student table needs name, surname, email etc. However, students enroll in courses and can enroll in multiple courses running at various times during a year. Courses run in periods (defined) and can have multiple periods such as each month the course starts again. Thus students enroll in these periods for a course. Courses grouped can also work as a program together. Thus programs are a combination of course period making up a program running over the combined lengh of the courses. We need to keep track of which students are on which courses, busy, as well as upcoming courses. After capturing data for the system, functionality involves email notifications to students via their enrolled groups. I have a system spec as well as a basic MS Access sample DB to quote from. i am looking to have the software written using Yii for multiple opensource installations. As sample UI we are looking for a clean design with dashboard widgets similar to X2Engine (example) which is also written with the Yii Framework. Main technologies are Yii, PHP, MySQL
