An application to limit and control the amount of hours spent by children on a particular website. The application will be installed by a parent who will configure it with different accounts and policies. The parent may define a list of managed websites. The parent will be able to lock out periods of time when all access to the managed sites is blocked, for example, 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The parent will be able to specify a number of hours for each child, for example, 1 hour for user 1; and 2 hours for user 2. The parent will be able to create and delete accounts, and reset lost passwords.
When the children wish to visit a website that the parent has restricted via this application, they will need to enter a simple password. If the password is accepted, the children will be able to view that website. When a child's time is about to expire they will receive a warning so that they may prepare to log out or be disconnected. When the children's time at the website has expired the program will prevent the computer on which it is running from accessing the website any further. The interface and the children will use and that will report the remaining time will be a toolbar that will load into the browser interface.
The application will never interfere in viewing websites that are not managed by it. This application will work with current desktop operating systems and browsers as detailed below. The application will be difficult for children to disable. The application will log the time that each child user spends logged in. The administrative functions will be protected by a parental password. The system will start automatically whenever the computer is restarted. The application will be easy for parents to administer, and includes an installer and uninstaller. Last but not least, the application will include a licensing mechanism and be localizable.
