Add notification function and message seen function into a PHP Website.

In the messages section of the website, I need to add a notification box function in such a way that if User 1 sends User 2 a message, User 2 gets a notification popup on the corner of the page stating "User 1 has sent you a message".
I also need to add a seen functionality that will work in such a way that if User 1 sends User 2 a message and User 2 has seen it, a small tick should appear next to the message so User 1 knows his message has been read.
