Hi, We usually take pictures for reference and sculpt them in Zbrush for a high realistic poly model and make the model topology in Maya for rigging and animation. I am familiar with Chinese Kanji since I was learning Japanese for more than 4 years (and their Kanji are the same with Chinese). Since you want STL format I assume you need it for 3D printing and I have worked for a company specializing in 3D printing (forgive me if I'm wrong).
