Ushpa-Ushpa - NGO Project

“Proyecto Horizonte” is a community developed program in the settlement “Mineros de San Juan, Ushpa-Ushpa” in the outskirts of Cochabamba. In a little over six years the project developed from a daycare for 35 children to a full-fledged community development organization with a school and daycare for over 800 children, a modern healthcare center, infrastructure development projects, women’s support and artisan groups, and microfinance operations.

Horizonte became a poster child for privately funded project relying almost fully on private donations offering employment for local people as well as integrating the community in its decision making. Over 70 employees look after the well being of the children and all the other aspects of the place. The mothers club TANTAKUNA operates the own bakery and started to produce handcraft that is sold in local markets. More and more organizations like to collaborate with Horizonte, like more recently a foundation that works with teenagers and adolescents or a group of volunteers providing eye exams and second hand glasses to the population.

The overall operating “cost per child” are approximately US$ 18/month to which the parents contribute at an increasing pace.

Since 2008, Proyecto Horizonte also has a complete Computer room and has successfully organized computer training for children and adults. In the past two years a volunteer has organized all the classes. We are searching for a new volunteer to continue and further expand the work.

Brief Description:

Teach children computer basics, the use of Microsoft Office, Web design and other programs.

Responsible for the computer room and all its equipment.

Offering Internet access for the children within the community.

Working with the children on maintaining and writing the blog.

Communicate with local companies and organizations about assisting in our classrooms, teaching you and the children Web design, creating a children’s webpage and organizing special events

Other Knowledge required:

Basic to intermediate computer knowledge.

An interest in teaching and working with children, passionate about the work, and a positive attitude.

Why your work makes a difference:

The children of Ushpa-Ushpa love to spend time in the computer room. Most enjoy taking classes, which is now a mandatory subject for all of our older students. Learning includes how to handle a computer in general, browse the Internet, compose emails and manage an account, write blogs, use Microsoft Office, run design programs on the web. We also teach them to enjoy listening to music and play multi-player video games online.

Longer-term, we would also like to work with local organizations to offer internships to our graduating students.

It is important to have someone dedicated to this position for a longer term, as the role requires knowledge on how to work with the children and developing their progress reports.

As a member of the faculty, this role gives the chance to make a genuine difference to learning and education for the children. They are passionate about their work within the lab.

While this may seem like the basics, education and learning is not the norm in the Ushpa-Ushpa community. Through generous donations, we have been able to secure a facility that allows the children to broaden their learning horizons, and gives them access to a skill that is now necessary.

Time required:

This is a full time position

12 hours per week of classes and additional preparation time

8 hours per week of computer classes with the younger children

1 hour per week managing the student’s blog

6 hours per week of free time with children from the community, assisting with using the Internet

Working days and time:

School days are Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm.
