Buddypress 'Groups' date handling and sorting

My WordPress BuddyPress site utilises subgroups functionality in order to record details of Events (i.e. on this date an Event/gathering is occurring). Each event has a start time/date and end time/date, captured in UNIX timestamp format (i.e. '1588935041').
The start date/time field is called 'event_start_datetime' and the end date/time field is called 'event_end_datetime'. These are currently not adjusted to be stored in UTC, but whatever time the user inputs in their local time, which makes it difficult to negotiate British Summer Time (BST) and also to expand beyond one timezone.
The way that these dates are handled also impacts Event listing views.
The current Events listings views show a list of all Events (subgroups), sorted by active most recently. If a user is coming to see upcoming events, the expectation is that these are sorted by event start date. Furthermore, in several views, it is only relevant to show events that have not yet ended.
