| **Philosophy** |
| There are a couple things I want to cover here. The principles i use in system and visual design as well as rules I have for projects that I work on through RAC.
**Usability:** Usability can apply to anything. How you organize your desk, how you organize your clothes etc. You set it up so it’s easy to use, Right? So when you want to design a website or software product you should also thing about that also. You generally have to assume, the user will know less than you do about your product or site. If you don’t take usability into account, you will end up frustrating users and customers. Which means in the end means lost revenue.
**Accessibility:** This applies primarily to websites. You want to have a website to sell your product(s). You think that a flashy full blown presentation will be the best way to do it right? That’s not the case. You have to make some assumptions.
1. Not everyone will have broadband.
2. Netscape 4.x is still widely used.
3. Sound on your website is bad for some environments (Offices)
4. Some people like to use lynx to surf faster.
5. Some of your customers might be blind and using a screen reader.
So what do you do? Avoid using flash whenever possible or provide an alternative. Allow multiple ways to browse your website. Use XHTML and style sheets so the webpage will still be usable when using old or text browsers. Provide alt tags for all images for those using screen readers. Optimization through the use of XHTML and Small images sizes to make modem users happy (You really don’t want to hear "Your site loads too slow")
**Standards:** Especially with web design, standards are very important. They can help you save bandwidth, lessen development costs and make your site more useable. |
