Commvault Backup Solution -- 2

Introduction:

You have been recently hired as the Backup Administrator for ABC Corp. As the Backup administrator you are fully responsible for the overall backup environment. ABC Corp. strives to have an always-on network, and utilizes two datacenters with all production systems configured to be highly available across the sites. ABC Corp. is currently experiencing several key issues with its backup environment, and as a result your manager has tasked you with designing and implementing a new backup environment in addition to developing a migration plan to ensure previously backed up data can continue to be restored in the new environment.

Current Issues:

In its current configuration ABC Corp is experiencing the following issues which need to be addressed in the newly proposed backup environment:

- The current backup solution Commvault is not configured to support both of ABC Corp’s sites

- Exchange mailbox item level backups frequently exceed the backup window

- Exchange database level backups are causing exchange performance issues and have been changed to run weekly

- File system full backups on the file servers frequently exceed the backup window

- There are no currently configured jobs to create offline copies of production backup data to be sent off site

- Other network services are experiencing performance degradation when backups are running

- Primary backup storage appliances are running low on storage space

Requirements:

In designing this new backup environment you must ensure it satisfies the below requirements:

- Any software selected must be able to run on the latest Microsoft server operating system or run as a turnkey appliance (can be virtual)

- Currently backed up data must be made available for restores once the new system is fully implemented

- Any proposed solution must be able to natively back up commonly used Microsoft Enterprise applications eg Sharepoint 2013, SQL 2012/2014, Exchange 2010/2013, and Microsoft Server Roles (DFS, Active Directory)

- System must support full high availability and disaster recovery of all components across both of ABC Corp’s sites

- The proposed system should be able to restore backups entirely from the secondary site when the primary site is unavailable

- The proposed system should be able to backup workloads entirely from the secondary site should the primary site become unavailable

Architecture:

Commvault is currently deployed to back up the production workloads at ABC’s Corp’s primary site.

All workloads to be backed up are configured to be highly available and redundant across both of ABC Corp’s sites, workloads can be run from either site.

Workload Sizes:

Workload Nightly Backup Size Daily Rate of Change Retention

Exchange Database 1Tb 3.5% 6 Months

Exchange Mailbox 1Tb 3.5% 4 Months

Filesystem Backups 4Tb 5% 4 Months

SQL Backups 500Gb 1.2% 6 Months

The configured backup window is currently 6PM to 4AM daily, all backups must be completed before 4AM

Objective:

You are responsible for developing a new or revised data protection environment that addresses the issues and concerns listed above, in addition to a high level migration plan.

You will be given 15 minutes to present your proposal and will then answer questions from the interview panel.
