I started my professional writing career as a software engineer. I worked in this capacity for twenty years. My projects began with a design document, a proposal, stating the work I was going to carry out. I always made sure this information went into the comments. During my time at Maxwell Labs, I would also write user guides so that end-users could use the product I created. As a contractor to NASA, I wrote design documents and information on how to verify the software. My goal was to write papers that had the detail for subordinates carry out and understandable so that my bosses and other management folks could follow. I never saw the point of writing something hard to understand. It was supposed to be a working document
