Fix problem with MySQL/phpMyAdmin installation

I have phpMyAdmin installed on a VPS and for some reason it developed a fault when I was using it in a normal way, i.e. just inserting a new row to a table using phpMyAdmin. Now the security is broken on it (i.e. anyone can access phpMyAdmin) and sometimes I get an error when I try to export a database, such as:
[login to view URL]: Missing parameter: what
[login to view URL]: Missing parameter: export_type
I would like this issue to be fixed and also for MySQL and phpMyAdmin to be updated to the latest stable versions. I am thinking that updating to the latest versions might fix the issue, but if not I will need the issue to be fixed in another way.
