It would be more robust if instead of relying on a single approach, a few are used and the best response is provided. In all cases, it is necessary to use derivative-free methods. The initial idea is not to rely only on one but a few. Right now, optimization is done via BFGS. Nelder-mead was not better but it seems that it did solve a few cases where BFGS fails. it is possible to add a third option, particle swarm. Three methods will ensure a much more robust library.
