WooCommerce Parent Theme Web Site ------> Switched to WooCommerce Child Theme"

Here is the situation, had a developer create an E-commerce web site about 1 year ago.
The web site is fine, some small issues here and there.
The main issue is that he created the web site under a "parent theme", instead of a "child theme"
As a result, I am not able to do any WooCommerce updates, because when updated, it erases any past customized work that was done. Had someone try to update the WooCommerce theme and it erased all of the custom work, that was done. Fortunately I had a back up, but after I did the back up, the web site has not been working properly with some software plugins.
Would like to be able to update the theme, so that I am able to use the theme fully updated.
I am open to how we move forward with this.... 1) Either use the existing template theme and transition the Parent theme to Child theme 2) Use the same theme, but start fresh and copy and paste the code, images, data base, over to the new theme.
Preferably would like to use the existing template theme and move it to the child theme.
