Hi, I´m Marco. I'm running my own automation company and have been freelancing for more than two years here in Mexico. Previously I worked as an embedded software engineer for a big German company. I really like to "bricolage" Robots and RC cars out of mechanical scrap, just for fun.

I'm fascinated with mobile robotics, UGV's in particular. I have done several designs... here is a couple of them.

DIY UGVs

Recently I won one of the NASA contests from the AstroBee series.

NASA is developing a (new) robotic assistant for the International Space Station (ISS) called AstroBee. This assistant navigates all over the ISS autonomously, helping astronauts with tasks as camcording and sensor measurings for example.

NASA crowdsourced the development of a key functionality of the system: A robot arm for the AstroBee, so it became capable of perching to the ISS walls and keep a fixed position when required. NASA has posted a few contests in order to address this design problem from different perspectives.

I decided to participate in a couple of them and I was lucky to won one. The contest consisted of designing an Electrically Driven Clamp (EDC) as the end-effector for the AstroBee robotic arm. Honestly, my design may have some implementation flaws, but... I consider that the idea is conceptually valuable, so NASA did it too.

Thank you NASA for having the initiative to engage people in your projects. Being able to take a look in a real NASA project was amazing.

I also do aerial photogrammetry with drones. This is the easiest way to get detailed 3D models of buildings, highways, mountains etc. You only need a reliable drone equipped with an HD camera and a planner mission software. Once the drone is in the air, it takes photographs of the ground at regular time intervals following a preprogrammed flight path. It basically scans the area with photos. Then the photos are feed to a photogrammetry software, which does the magic of recreating from 2D images, a high-definition and detailed 3D model. I use Pix4D as the photogrammetric software.

A colleague and I provide this service to mining companies mostly. We retrieve for them, geological data like terrain volume and feature geo-localization for example. We have modeled like one hundred of hectares so far.

Drone Photogrammetry

These modules are IoT interfaces designed to automatize a common piece of industrial equipment know as Variable-Frequency Drives (VFD). Basically, it is a box with a Raspberry Pi inside running a fancy GUI that communicates with the VFDs thought the Modbus protocol. These modules provide a way to control and automatize the equipment on-site but also, they can be connected to the internet and communicate with a cloud server leveraging Industry 4.0 capabilities. You can monitor and control in real time the equipment from your office and automatize simple decisions like performing maintenance for example.

The modules were designed and programmed by me, while a colleague of mine helped me with the back-end and front-end software apps. This is the closest thing I have to a product but it is not yet. Every time I sell/install one of these I have to modify the software slightly since every application is different. Anyway, it has been a successful project so far.

MicroPGA: IoT Module

Recently I designed and built a bottle agitator machine for a mining industrial laboratory. The machine was invented from zero and there are no similar ones on the market. From the structural frame to the bottle holders I designed all the mechanical components and the software too. Electronics was purchased and integrated.

The purpose of the device is to perform separations of chemical mixtures efficiently, according to the customer requirements. It is capable to agitate the bottles in two different patterns: vertical and horizontal as shown in the video. The horizontal movement creates a whirlpool inside the bottle, this is an effective method to separate the mixture. Both motion patterns were requested by the customer.

The system is controlled by a Raspberry Pi. A simple GUI allows users to operate the machine through a touchscreen. Programming was made in Python using the Kivy framework for building GUIs.

Marco Saul C. provided a thorough design submission and was very helpful in the final handover and product delivery.
