Need help with optimisation of PHP and mysql query.

We are trying to search through a wordpress database to return an intelligent search that gives us lessons from an lms that relate to a query that the user types in (in an app - not wordpress)
We need to be able to return the results as json
We are having issues with the results being very slow to return and it may be that our query is wrong (we believe the issue is in the loop of the php.
The search results should be intelligent in the sense that for example if the course title is
Modifying User Permissions
and the user searches for modify permissions the results should come back ordered by relevance.
The results should be structured similar to this
Results Required
Course (Name, postid)
Section1
Section2
Lesson1
Lesson2
Meta
We are using learnpress as the plugin - but we are NOT using wordpress for this - it needs to run outside wordpress - pure php/json/mysql
should be straightforward for php/mysql expert
