I am looking for a website similar in function to the [[login to view URL]][1] site used to track currency in circulation. I would like to be able to generate a unique serial number and assign it to an item. When people encounter this item, they can report back to the website, enter the serial number and read about and update information about that item (serial number). Anyone entering information would be added to a email list and receive updates when someone else posts about their particular item. I can provide a DB with Zip codes and Long/Lat coordinates for calculating the distance traveled as well as some existing code from a previous project where this was done.
Basically, a item will be assigned a serial number, and users can track and tell stories about that item online as well as track it's route. Individuals will also be able to request a serial numbered item (with pay pal integration) to start their own traveling story.
The [login to view URL] site also has some nice statistical information about dollar bills that are being tracked and these features would be nice to include as well.
There would be a place for a user to create an account where they could enter the serial number of their item and also receive email updates as it travels.
This is a charity project where I am going to print up cards with a serial number and these can be given to others as a "random act of kindness" and they could go online, enter a brief story and then pass it on to someone else.
Statistical information such as the most passes, furthest distance, users with the most number of active items would be displayed on the homepage as well as sent in email updates as the cards travel to other people.

I added a one page PDF to this project that give a basic idea of what I am looking at for this project. I think it can be done with less than 8 pages depending how it was coded. This would just be enough to get it running to start with and "bells and whistles" could be added later if it works out to be interesting.
