BIOL5700 Research Proposal Assignment
Write a 3-year research grant proposal according to the guidelines below. Send it to Hal on OWL.
I will sort you into ACommittees@, each of which will have about C$100,000 (nominal!) per year and about 5 proposals to review. So ask for $0-100,000 per year, as your needs dictate. The committees will assess the proposals based on (in order of priority):
a) The scientific significance of the proposal--how the proposed research will increase our knowledge of biological systems.
b) A clear explanation of long-term objectives, short-term goals, methods, and need for particular equipment or personnel.
One week after the hand-in date, the committees will explain how they divided up the money and what they liked and did not like about the proposals.
The mark I give you for your proposal will depend on my evaluation of your proposal (according to these criteria), not the committees=! You will not be on the committee that assesses your own proposal.
You are an Assistant Professor at a Canadian University like Dalhousie. You can assume that you will have enough lab. space to do the research and that any equipment normally available in Dalhousie teaching labs is also available. You do not have to apply for funds for your own salary--you will work 30% of your time on the project over the next three years. However your proposal will have to cover costs for any assistants, post-docs (at about $40,000 per year full-time), graduate students (at about $20,000 per year full-time), field-work, equipment, materials and travel needed to carry out the project.
The proposal can be in any area of biology, but must not be an edited version of a previously written proposal (by you, your supervisor, or anyone else).
Your proposal should have the following sections:
Your B00 number (not name)
Title: Brief but informative
Total amount requested per year: Give totals for each of three years.
Summary: One paragraph in layman's language, so the granting agency can explain to the public what its money is being used for.
Budget: Itemize for each of the three years under headings such as: Salaries, Equipment, Materials and Supplies, Travel, Other. Explain any major expenses. Just give your best estimate of expenses--there is no need to find the exact prices of certain kinds of equipment, salaries of post-docs, etc.
Justification for project: Describe long-term objectives and short-term goals, review the literature relevant to the project (give a list of references cited at the end), describe your methods and approach to the research, and explain its anticipated significance. This should be comprehensible for biologists unfamiliar with your specific area of research.
Maximum length (including everything!): 3 single-spaced 8.5x11 pages
