Codeigniter webpage broken after host php update

We had a dynamic php driven website running with the codeigniter 1.7.1 template framework. The host updated php to version 5.3.3 and the website now only shows a blank screen. Probably the fix consists in updating the codeigniter framework, change plugins to helpers, etc. and get the page working again.
