Automated external defibrillator research

The HCMRF is a non-profit research foundation investigating the disease of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Affected persons have a thickened heart muscle in the left ventricle. This thick muscle can lead to disturbances in electrical signals resulting in sudden cardiac arrest. One of our core focuses is to reduce, prevent, and eventually eliminate the risk of sudden death from HCM. Aside from screening and early detection, one of the best tools we have in the fight is an automated external defibrillator “AED” which can restart the arrested heart muscle. The most important considerations with an AED is the immediacy of its use - the longer the heart is stopped, the more severe the damage done to the body. In certain states, legislation has been put in place requiring the presence of AEDs in highly trafficked areas, large gatherings, schools, sports practices, and athletic events. We are in need of someone to compile information on various state laws regarding AEDs being required in the venues listed above. Attached please find some information we have recorded on the state laws in NY, NJ, and CT. Please draw on this as an example, expand the coverage on these states and through the other states. Look for any litigation that may have taken place over incidents where an AED was needed and not available, both in situations where it was required by law or not. Feel free to restructure the formatting as you see fit. We will be using this information to promote awareness and regulatory compliance in regards to this issue.
