Create a PHP function to check the maximum peak level of an audio file

G'day, I have a function here which does similar work but it needs modifications I would think for your application. Please could you let me know the following bits of information: 1) The format the file is in. If it's compressed (MP3, OGG etc) we will need to uncompress it before we analyze it's raw data. 2) The expected lengths of files (too long a file and the PHP function may time out depending on the script settings in [login to view URL] 3) When we refer to 'peak' are we referring to 'absolute' peak or a peak envelope? Absolute peak is determined by the loudest sample where as an envelope peak is the loudest 'area' of the audio. The latter is generally used to compute normalization and AGC routines.
