Creating Tabbed view content pane on an Open Atrium Drupal distribution & FB type notification system

PART 1 Tabbed content pane that works with panelizer/panels. kind of like [login to view URL] or [login to view URL] The current content panes have a filter that enables the user to filter by taxonomy term. This filter will be removed and several filtered views(content panes) will be used instead. These content panes will need to be displayed in tabs so the user can switch between calendars easily ...without having to navigate to another page or filter the results. The ideal would be an ajax loaded/preloaded/time delayed tabbed pane. So I need an adapted module or module that will enable me to add a tabbed content pane to a panalized page/node PART 2 Facebook type user alerts in Open Atrium Menus Like this [login to view URL] needs to show separate icons for events/Messages/Alerts/discussionsI need to make the Intranet more interactive to display alerts to new content. The users do not want to have to look for new content they wish to be alerted. More specifically - popup alerts or an interactive navigation bar. The users would like to be notified of new content added to "discussion", "Private Messages" and "events" areas on the site. I am unable to use node.js due to restrictions on the hosting server. So limited to cron or other suggestions. If you imagine the alerts you get on the homescreen/lockscreen of the android system... I currently use the "User Alert" module to some success but this is limited to a custom content type. The only issue I see with this popup alerts are if there are many they would need to be grouped with a number and possible drop down function
