Hi! I'm Simon, an electrical engineer student (about to graduate). I'm not an expert in networks, but I have plenty of knowledge of the main protocols used in the internet for the application you are requiring, IP, TCP, TLS, HTTP, setting DNS, etc. I have plenty of experience with modbus using siemens PLCs ,power meters, an connecting them to SCADA system. I have also done some hobby project using GSM and LTE modules and programming them using AT commands. As you pointed out a VPN is a great solution for your problem, it makes a secured channel though the internet and makes everything looks as if were a local network. Though I doubt you could archive that using the gateway you are using. I have some other ideas in which you can communicate using the gateway without the need of a VPN. I assume you have to control and monitore some elements in the oil fields and you want to connect them to a server. I can help you with the server, I have a already working a scada server, I can help you get your own scada server running if you already haven't it, and to connect any device you need to.
