Chef running commands on remote nodes from workstation?

Chef Server 12.8 chefwork dk 16.28 on Ubuntu - need this computer job to be completed 1 hour after started and will pay and leave 5 star feedback - need to show and document what changed trying to get this completed. I am in the process of learning CHEF. How can I run a command that does this ALL from the CHEF workstation running CHEF DK I do the following on the workstation vi cookbooks/recipes/motd_cookbook/[login to view URL] knife cookbook upload motd_cookbook knife bootstrap chefnode10 -N chefnode10 -P x -xroot -r ‘recipe[motd_cookbook’ or knife node run_list set chefnode10 motd_cookbook I do the following from chefnode10 chef-client Why do I have to run chef-client on chefnode10? Can I run this ALL from chef workstation? How do I do so?
