Problem Statement Due to economic restructuring, traditional manufacturing activities in Hong Kong relocated to Mainland. As a result, many industrial buildings are now vacant and wasting valuable land resources. Referencing to Policy Address since 2009 to 2013, although the Hong Kong Government has announced a package of initiatives to promote revitalization of old industrial buildings through facilitating redevelopment and conversion of vacant or under-utilized industrial buildings, the policy will be lapsed in 2016 due to lower applications and discouraged by many rejected cases. Meanwhile, the Government also emphasized the “Modernization of Agriculture” on the policy address in 2015-2016. However, the concept of vertical farming in industrial building has not been fully applied in Hong Kong comparing with other regions like USA, Singapore and Canada. In this dissertation, it aims at assessing the feasibility and benefit of conducting vertical farming in industrial Building in Hong Kong and evaluating the effectiveness of the revitalization of industrial building policy. 2. Aim and Objectives i. Aim This study aims at evaluating the feasibility of the conversion of industrial buildings for vertical farming in Hong Kong and also evaluating the effectiveness of the Policy of Revitalizing Private Industrial Buildings from current factual conditions and from the perspectives of different stakeholders. If the ideas are feasible, the society will be benefited. Hong Kong can get the better use of industrial buildings and urban modernization of agriculture. ii. Research Objectives The objectives of this paper are attempt: ● To understand the revitalization measures for industrial buildings implemented by the Hong Kong Government ● To evaluate the feasibility of converting industrial buildings into vertical farming ● To explore the technology (in view of building services engineering) factors of industrial building that suit for vertical farming. ● To explore the economic contribution of vertical farming in industrial building ● To assess the educational value of vertical farming in industrial building ● To provide a generalized model of re-development of agriculture in industrial building
